    Student-Athlete Employment

Many issues involving boosters and student-athletes have garnered national media attention as of late, including the decision of one university to dismiss two student-athletes due to violations of NCAA student-athlete employment regulations. Over time, the student-athletes received payment in excess of time actually worked. The institution determined that the student-athletes and the employer at the time, a known booster, knowingly violated NCAA rules.

Please remember that, while enrolled student-athletes may seek employment during both the academic year and the summer, the employment must meet the following regulations:
  • Student-athletes must be compensated only for work actually performed.
  • Student-athletes may NOT be paid in advance. Pay can only be provided after work is performed.
  • Student-athletes must be compensated at a rate commensurate with the going rate for similar services in that locality.
  • Student-athletes may NOT be compensated for the value or utility they may have for the employer because of the publicity, reputation, fame or personal following they have obtained because of athletics ability.
  • In regards to a sales position, student-athlete's names, photographs or athletics reputations may NOT be used to promote the employer's business or product.

Provided these regulations are met, there is no limit on the amount of money student-athletes can earn. If you intend to hire a TCU student-athlete at your place of business, please be sure to remind the student-athlete that he/she must consult the TCU Athletics Compliance office regarding the employment arrangements. The TCU Department of Athletics appreciates your efforts to comply with NCAA rules and regulations.

Remember, always ask before you act!!

Please feel free to contact the Athletics Compliance Office at (817) 257-7525.
